Dryer Vent & Air Duct Cleaning: MA, NH & Southern ME
Two real Seacoast homes. Two very different duct problems. Here is what our cameras showed before we started, what we pulled out, and how each home breathed easier by the time we packed up the truck.
The best way to show what duct cleaning does is to show the work. This June, Brian and Keenan handled two residential jobs a few miles apart, one in Exeter, NH and one in Stratham, NH. One home had years of settled dust choking its airflow. The other had that damp, musty smell that shows up the first hot week of summer. Both got sorted the same day.
Why Do We Share Real Before and After Photos?
Plenty of duct cleaning ads use stock photos of ducts that were never in your house. We take our own. Every job gets photographed with our inspection camera before we touch anything and again once we finish, so you see the exact metal we cleaned inside your walls.
That matters in this trade. A lot of homeowners have been burned by a low ball price that turned into a pushy upsell at the door. We are a family business that has done this since 1993, we price the job upfront, and the camera does the talking. It is also how we have earned 100 plus Google reviews at a perfect 5.0 rating.
What Was Clogging the Air Ducts in This Exeter Home?
The homeowner called us after noticing a thin layer of fine grey dust settling on furniture just a day or two after cleaning. They had been in the house six years and had never had the ducts cleaned. That combination usually means the buildup is coming from inside the system, not from the room.
What we foundOur camera showed the return trunks lined with a thick, felt-like coat of dust, pet dander, and carpet fibers. The home had a small kitchen remodel a couple of years back, and a fair amount of drywall dust and plaster grit had settled into the supply branches and never left. In a few of the branch lines the buildup was heavy enough to cut down the air actually reaching the second-floor bedrooms.
We hooked our negative-air vacuum to the main trunk, which puts the whole duct network under constant suction so nothing loose can drift back into the rooms while we work. Keenan then went register by register with rotary brushes and air whips, knocking the caked-on dust off the duct walls so the vacuum could carry it out of the house and into our sealed containment.
The resultThe duct walls came back to bare, clean metal. The homeowner said the air felt fresher right away, and over the next week far less dust was settling on their surfaces. If your home is doing the same thing, our Exeter, NH air duct cleaning service is built for exactly this.
What Causes a Musty Smell When You First Turn On the AC?
A Stratham family turned on their central air for the first time this summer and got hit with a strong, musty, dirty-sock smell coming through the vents. With two young kids in the house, they wanted it checked before they ran the system again. This is one of the most common calls we get once the humid weather lands.
What we foundThe smell almost always comes down to moisture meeting dust. The cooling coils were dripping condensation, which is normal in summer. The problem was the ductwork around them was coated in organic dust and pollen, so the damp air had something to cling to and turn stale. A few supply registers in the basement had damp dust clumped on the grates, starting to choke the airflow.
We isolated the coils and ductwork first so nothing spread through the house while we worked. Then we brushed and vacuumed the supply and return lines, pulling out the damp organic dust that was holding the odor. Once that buildup is gone, the smell has nothing left to grow on. By the time we finished, the vents were putting out clean, neutral air and the registers were clear again.
The resultThe musty smell was gone, and airflow at the vents came back noticeably stronger with the register buildup cleared. The system stopped straining to push cool air through clogged grates. You can read more about how we handle this on our air duct and HVAC cleaning page.
What Are the Signs Your Air Ducts Need Cleaning?
You do not need a lab test to know something is off. These two jobs are a good checklist, because most homes that call us are noticing at least one of them:
- Dust settles back on your furniture within a day or two of cleaning.
- A musty or stale smell comes through the vents, especially when the AC or heat first kicks on.
- Some rooms feel weaker on airflow than others, often upstairs bedrooms.
- Recent remodeling or construction left drywall dust in the house.
- You have pets, or someone in the home deals with allergies or asthma.
- You cannot remember the ducts ever being cleaned.
None of these mean an emergency. They mean the system is due. Clearing it out is a straightforward job when a home is set up like the two above.
How Often Should Air Ducts Be Cleaned?
For most Seacoast homes, every three to five years is a sensible window. Push toward the shorter end if you have pets, run the AC hard through our humid summers, have finished a renovation, or have someone in the house with allergies. Homes with none of those can usually wait longer. If you are not sure where your home lands, we would rather tell you it can wait than sell you a job you do not need yet.
Why Local Duct Cleaning Matters on the Seacoast
Our stretch of coast puts real stress on a home's air system. Humid, salty summer air feeds musty odors like the Stratham job, and long heating seasons pull dust through the ducts all winter. A crew that works these towns every week, from Salisbury up through Exeter, Stratham, Hampton, and Portsmouth, knows what tends to build up in these houses and what to look for first.
